Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at my preliminary task, what do I feel I have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

In the priliminary task, I didn't know alot about how to shoot, so my group and I used the task to play with the camera and figure out how to use it to form a simple narrative. There are shots when thec amera is reflected in the shadows or windows, and the camera is a bit too shakey at points
In our first video, an image of the camera operator is seen in the shadows.
This is a mistake and makes our test look like the story of the worlds worst stalker.

In my group's opening, however, I had gained better knowledge of how to use my movie expertise (or nerdiness as it is often known) and a new knowledge of camera shots in order to assist the group in making the opening for our film and breaking some conventions of our genre. I also gained knowledge of how to edit (Beth edited the preliminary and I edited the opening) and how to stay calm whilst editing. I had to experiment and play about in order to fix everything into place so that the clip flowed and didn't look too bad. I think I worked on the type of shots and the length of cuts in our film to make it less boring and repetitive. I also used some over the top sound effects for comedic purposes and used music to match the action in the scenes.

Evaluation Question 6

What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We shot the clip on an Ipod
I had very limited edit software programe (Windows Movie Maker), so I had to be inventive. I firstly put all my footage together and cut them down in length. Then I muted the sounds. I found royalty free music and sound effects on Youtube and used Youtube to mp3 converter to change them into audio clips, which I then edited into my video. If I did another clip, I would try and aquire some better filming equipment and try and get a better editing programme than Windows movie maker, as it is too simplistic and slow to use, which annoyed me deeply :)

Windows movie maker was used for the editing process.

In my research, I used Facebook to survey my friends on their favorate
Superhero movies.
I used wikipedia to help with the critical and commercial
response to various films in my chosen genre
IMDb was useful in my research of target audiences for films
in my chosen genre, as well as their overall sucess.

I created the logos for the opening using
FlamingText.com
Youtube was useful throughout the whole process. Not only did I use it to upload and embed my clips into blogger, but also I used it to find various analisis videos and trailers/openings of films both released and upcoming films (for research), royalty free music and sound effects (the latter two I coverted using Youtube to mp3 converter).

Evaluation Question 5

How did I attract/adress my audience?

Our logo's are used as in-joke for superhero fans by
paroding the name of a film and production
studio within that genre.

We used the photo's in the opening to show real social issues for teenagers like anger, bulling and break-ups.

We wanted the film to appeal to the audience who typically watch superhero films (teenage males) and also make it more universal by adding real social issues like loneliness, anger, bulling and relationships. We also interpreted many conventions from various other genres, like dark comedy and teen drama. By doing this, we hoped to break the stereotypical conventions of the superhero movie and gain a wider audience.

Evaluation Question 4

Who will be the audience for my media product?

My initial idea was to create a film clip aimed at teenaged males.
After checking IMDb I found out that the more mainstream films like The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers are most popular with teenagers and break the superhero film stereotypical audience as on average more women watched them than men. However the more idependant films like Kick Ass and Super attracted the more sterotypical audience of teenage males. This was the target audience we went for.
In order to draw in my target audience, I would ask my distributer to advertise the film in magazines aimed at men, perticularly the film magazine Empire.
